Winter is just around the corner so there’s no better time to start planning your very first glamping adventure than right here and right now. While accommodations range in size and scope, from spacious luxury pods to humble wooden lodges, they all share one very special feature: nature. Whether looking for an adrenaline rush this winter or seeking refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, here are five glamping activities to make your trip a truly memorable one.
1) Sleigh ride through the snow
In my opinion, sleigh rides are one of the most romantic winter activities for couples but don’t let that stop you from hitching a ride. I took a sleigh ride with a group of friends three winters ago and had a blast. Make sure to dress warmly and bring blankets. It’s not a bad idea to also pack a thermos of tea or hot chocolate either. Whatever you do, don’t forget to bring your camera because there will be plenty of snow-covered trees and fuzzy animals that might make you feel like you’ve entered a real-life fairy tale.
2) Hit the slopes
It’s hard to imagine a winter without at least a weekend of skiing involved. If you have even more time to spare, consider spending a few days learning how to snowboard or vice versa. Sure, there will be lots of bumps and bruises at the beginning but it’s only uphill from there, no pun intended. Many resorts offer lessons, sometimes free with a lift ticket and sometimes for an additional fee, but it will definitely get you on the path to success. At the end of the day, take off your boots and reward yourself with a nice cup of hot chocolate.
3) Warm-up indoor
Whether you’re a pro pool player or just really good at tasting wines, there’s no better time to amp up your game than during the chilly winter season. Plus, after an active day of hitting the slopes, you’ll likely want some indoor time and that’s when bars, saloons and cozy cafes come in handy. Eating dishes inspired by the region gives you a clear sense of place and this is something that many glamp-sites incorporate. For example, The Dining Room at The Ranch at Rock Creek serves Montana-raised beef and local, organically grown produce.
4) Hop on a snowmobile
Are horses not really your thing? Opt for a fast-paced snowmobile ride instead. If you’ve never gone snowmobiling before, make sure to get an entry-level model (usually called trail models) because these are easy to handle and maneuver compared to more advanced models. Most glamp-sites will have ones for rent and the same goes for helmets and other accessories. Dress warmly because the faster you go, the stronger the wind will feel when it sweeps past your clothes.
5) Lap in luxury
Just because you’re “roughing” it out in the wilderness doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of the finer things in life. In fact, the more active you are during the day, the more likely you’ll be in desperate need of a relaxing, rejuvenating massage. Many luxury glamp-sites have a designated spa area where guests can relax the mind and pamper the body. In general, spa treatments tend to rotate seasonally, with many massages aimed at soothing sore muscles and hydrating dry skin. Saunas are particularly appealing during the winter months.
