AFAR has been one of my favorite magazines, if not my favorite, since its launch in 2009. While compared to other travel magazines that have been around much longer, I found AFAR at the perfect moment in my life. The first time I ever traveled abroad was in Spring of 2008 during my semester studying and working in London.
Up until that point, international travel had only been a dream of mine, but during my semester in London I was suddenly living that dream. As I visited cities around Europe that I had only read about in books and magazines, I realized just how big and beautiful the world is and how much I want to see it all.
A year later it was time for college graduation and in essence, the start of my real life. Looking back now, it makes perfect sense that AFAR Magazine immediately caught my attention. I had a serious case of Wanderlust and AFAR managed to quench my thirst for travel.
As an Ambassador, I’ll be regularly adding content to the site (and you can too!) and will be promoting AFAR across my social networks. It’s rare that I take on a project of this size but I’ve always believed that when you truly want to do something, you find the time. Period.
I’m sure it will be a bohemian balancing act maintaining my AFAR duties while running Bohemian Trails and meeting my other freelance writing assignments, but who doesn’t love a challenge, right? And while I’ve gotten over the initial thrill of seeing my name in magazine mastheads (I write for a few in-flights), it will be rewarding to see my name there in connection to Bohemian Trails.
What I like about AFAR’s platform is that it combines my favorite social media elements into one united whole. “Highlights” are like short blog posts that offer tips to other travelers. You can write about where to shop, eat, drink, where to stay and things to do. “Wanderlists” are almost like Pinterest Boards where you can organize your travel experiences by themes while the “Like” tab is probably the easiest to grasp and certainly the most addictive. It works just like a Facebook or Google+ like.
