The last few months have flown by me and it’s now hard to believe that September is already here. After jaunting through Finland, Germany, England, France and most recently, Norway, I certainly have no cause for complaint. In honor of the passing season, I’ve decided to put a list together of 5 islands where I’d gladly get lost.
1) Feeling Small in Easter Island
Easter Island’s been on my bucket list ever since I learned of its existence, so there’s no use hiding the fact that I’d love to gaze upon these ancient ruins. As strange as this may sounds, I also would love to feel small. Sometimes, especially living in New York City, there’s this urgency for just about everything and sometimes it takes staring at a seemingly endless ocean or climbing to the top of the Empire State Building to remember that we are all so small yet still integral to the universe as a whole.
2) Fun and Sun in Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands and up until a few months ago, I barely knew of its existence. Tenerife may not be on the same level as Rio de Janeiro when it comes to throwing a Carnival bash, but don’t underestimate the popular island. Beginning in February and lasting roughly three weeks, Tenerife transforms into a playground of performances, competitions and all-around Carnival fun. Booking flights to Tenerife is pretty easy but plan ahead for better deals.
3) Learning to Surf in Barbados
I’ve eluded to this in old posts, but I’ve always wanted to learn to surf and while I could certainly take lessons on almost any beach, why not add a bit of tropical flair into the mix? Barbados actually has a pretty unbeatable reputation when it comes to surfing, especially for beginners hoping to master the adventurous art. The waves reach a consistant height and the destination itself does its best to accommodate the surfing community year round.
4) Whale Watching in Ammassalik
I’m more than slightly obsessed with wales – Killer Whales in particular. Ever since I chose this mammal for my fifth grade research paper, I’ve dreamed of sailing alongside them as they swim comfortably in their natural habitat. Ammassalik is an island in southeastern Greenland which is a prime spot for whale safaris, which generally run from late July to September. Whales are commonly spotted in the the sea and fjords throughout the Ammassalik area.
5) Time Traveling in Santorini
Santorini is one of many Greek islands and also one of many that I’d like to visit. I remember doing a project in elementary school about Greek Mythology and I was quickly mesmerized by the elaborate stories about the many gods and goddesses, each more over-the-top than the next. Traveling through Santorini, or any of the Greek islands for that matter, is the perfect setting to further study these tales while hopefully finding inspiration to create a piece of fiction myself.
