I’m going to take a guess and say that almost every 20-something has considered buying a one-way ticket and flying across the globe. There’s something romantic about the idea of dropping everything and living a different life for however long you decide. Whether it’s our stab at curing a severe case of escapism or just needing time to rejuvenate our minds and bodies, buying a one-way ticket remains an alluring thought for many of us.

While I’ve never actually bought a one-way ticket from one continent to another, I’ve thought about it many times. So if you are a dreamer like me, here are my top three recommendations for one-way ticket destinations based on location and proximity to other hotspots:

Madrid: If you’ve grown up in the States, the chances of knowing basic Spanish is likely. If you don’t, you’ve at least heard enough of it to get by. Madrid is not only the Capital of Spain, but it’s centrally located, making it easy to spend a few weeks touring through the country and driving along the coast. Once you are in Spain, taking buses or trains to various cities and even Portugal won’t be difficult. If you are curious about Northern Africa, Morocco is not far. Many of my friends who studied in Spain during college made the trek over to Morocco and had an amazing time.

Buenos Aires: Buenos Aires is beautiful on it’s own but it’s also not terribly far from Uruguay and other lesser known Argentinian cities like Tucumán and Luján. There are daily boat rides that take you to Montevideo, and Iguazu Falls is only about an hour and a half plane ride away. Iguazu borders Argentina and Brazil and offers some of the most spectacular views of waterfalls in the world. If you are on a budget like my friend and I were, you can take the “adventurous” route that consists of an 18-hour bus ride to and from the falls. Don’t be scared though, the buses are comfortable and they even serve food and wine on board. Think of it as a Harry Potter Knight Bus experience.

Sydney: This will be an expensive ticket no matter when you plan your getaway so just keep that in mind before booking. Sydney is one of the most popular Australian destinations and ideal for surfers and beach bums alike. If your goal in moving abroad is to hopefully to get a job there, any city in Australia will speak English, making the transition a bit easier. You will of course have to learn all the Aussie slang, but that’s all part of the fun. While you’re Down Under, check out the Great Barrier Reef and maybe even hop over to New Zealand and partake in a little touristy fun. There’s certainly nothing wrong with going on a Lord of the Rings Tour, even if you refuse to admit it to your friends back home.
