Whether you’re a notoriously light-packer like me or a lazy packer (also me), you’re going to need some travel to turn to time and time again. Since I’ve been hitting the road fairly often the past few months, I’ve rounded up give of my favorite products to take along on YOUR next trip. From suitcases that are smarter than you are to swimwear and shoes that double as wearable art, these creative brands don’t disappoint.
1) Bluesmart
Let’s start with the number one essential: your suitcase. I’ve written about Bluesmart before, and likely will again! I have their original model but if you’re on the hunt for a new carry-on (or checked bag), take a look at their latest Indiegogo campaign. They’ve already raised $1 million for their smart luggage and for good reason.
The case itself is super lightweight, which for lazy packers means you can fill it to the brim and it still won’t be overweight. There’s also added perks like a USB charger, an app that syncs with your device and does cool things like weigh your bag or alert you if your bag has drifted elsewhere (does this actually happen)?
Anyway, I use it on almost every trip, and it’s never failed me. Perfect for tech-savvy travelers or simply travelers with no upper body strength like me, who need a lightweight suitcase because they’re traveling solo.
2) Hickies
I know, the name is terrible, but the concept is genius! They’re another crowdfunded company—and just like the founders of Bluesmart—Argentinian!
In short, these “no tie elastic shoelaces” are a frequent traveler’s dream. Why? Because it turns sneakers into slip-on shoes, which is super convenient when going through airport security checkpoint lines. With every pack I’ve ordered, there are a few extra hickies that I use as keychains, hair ties, and the like. Best of all, their colors are as wild and crazy as their concept.
I first learned about them from a friend, as they are based in New York City as well and since then, I’ve been obsessed. I considered taking a picture of my sneakers as proof, but they’re dirty from hiking last weekend so I’m using a pretty Facebook image instead.
3) Function of Beauty
Nope, I’m not trying to be Zory Mory (see pic below) but I ran out of my Function of Beauty set right before leaving for Costa Rica. Anyway, mine came in hues of yellow and not pink, although these are also quite pretty.
As someone who has struggled with the wonders and woes of curly/frizzy hair since childhood, Function of Beauty came at just the right time in my life. I’ve tried so many products over the years and while some have worked out well, others have definitely fallen short. That’s where Function of Beauty comes in.
In short, the brand offers customized haircare based on your personal needs. I don’t remember all the survey questions but I remember stressing that I wanted a deep conditioner and something to alleviate the occasional scalp itching that I get. About a week later, my shampoo and conditioner arrived in the mail.
While these aren’t exactly travel-sized, they are small enough to take on a trip. Alternatively, buy a set of smaller bottles from your local pharmacy and transfer a bit over to meet the carry-on liquid requirements.
4) Entreaguas
Yes, finally one of my pictures made the cut! I first learned about Entreaguas about two years ago during a design-themed trip to Medellín, Colombia.
While there, I fell in love with a few local design brands, one of which is Entreaguas. The first thing I noticed about their swimwear was how soft the fabrics are and how intricate the details. When I later learned that they make a dedicated effort to employ single mothers, handicapped people, those with down syndrome and reintegrated youth (as part of the Entreaguas Foundation) I loved them all the more.
Not heading to the beach? That’s cool – no pun intended! They sell really cool accessories as well. My favorites are the hair bands because as mentioned above, my hair can get quite unruly, especially in humidity of any degree.
5) Bucketfeet
If you’re not planning to bring a pair of sneakers, then I highly suggest packing a pair or two of Bucketfeet. Yes, I’ve written about them before (and no, they aren’t paying me)! I love this brand; in fact, I just bought two new pairs for my Costa Rica trip during one very savvy sale.
What I like about Bucketfeet, besides the comfort and variety of styles, is that each pair is designed by an artist around the world. With every purchase, you get a little artist card when you shoes arrive. So far, I’ve helped support artists in London, Berkeley, Bogota and elsewhere (I can’t remember them all).
